The Cat Returns AU fanfic chapter 1

The tower had collapsed, thanks to the charges that had been built into the tower on its construction. Only the upper spire remained, Baron, Muta, and myself, stood hopelessly on the platform, for we had climbed to tower in vain, as they were again at ground level. "no...we're back where we started" I said in a saddened voice, Muta retorted "so what, we just stand here?", Baron chimed in as well "no much we CAN do, I'm afraid..". The three of us sat down on the platform, with nothing to do, as if someone had backed us into a corner with no way out. "Being a cat aint so bad" reassured Muta, this was obviously directed towards me, as Baron was busy fanning himself with his top hat. "Will I have to learn to like mice?" I asked, in acceptance that my hopes seemed bleak. Baron looked to the North and smiled "dont give up just yet", in the direction he was looking in, there was a line of Royal Guard soldiers, dressed in red uniforms, and through a door, came Prince Lune "its the Prince" I said in awe, as the cat I was to be married to, was coming closer, he stated to the king that Yuki had called him over, as there was an urgency he be here. Yuki came over to me and I was happy to see her again. When Lune stated to his father that he had already chosen a bride, and that it was Yuki he wished to marry, my heart leapt. The prince gave Yuki a wrapped box which contained fish crackers, like the ones I used to love as a kid. To my surprise, Yuki stated that she was the dirty stray I had fed as a child, and that my actions saved her life. Lune also recalled me saving him from getting killed by a truck, and that they owe their lives to me, but I kindly turned down the offer, saying I was happy enough to have them here. The Cat King then offered that I marry him, to which I refused. Lune told us that the portal to my world was at the top of the spire, only it was extremely close to dawn in my world. To help me get there faster, Muta threw me up about halfway, and I landed as nimbly as a cat would. Running up the stairs, I was giddy about getting home, and I got distracted, tripping on a stair and before me was a gap where a couple stairs had been a couple seconds but had crumbled away like the outside stairs, showing that the tower had not been maintained well. I almost fell, as I clung on for my life, my claws fully extended from my paws, to gain more grip on the hard stone stairs. Baron noticed this and called out to me in worry "HARU!!!!!!" I heard him exclaim. I felt afraid...afraid for my life...afraid for missing the deadline of dawn. I looked up at the exit portal to my world, and saw the sun was up, I had missed the deadline, and I would be stuck as a cat. "N-no....NOOO!!!!" I screamed and cried after I pulled myself up, and I huddled against the wall, sobbing until Baron caught up to me. He didnt need to ask what was bothering me, and sat down by my side, placing a gloved hand on my shoulder "Haru...I am terribly sorry..." he said, and he gave me a comforting hug, like one that a good friend would give to another close friend, as I sobbed into his shoulder, and he gave me some reassuring pats on my back. After 10 minutes, we went back down, and everyone was surprised to see me, in my cat form still, looking saddened. Yuki came over to me and gave me a comforting hug "oh Haru, Im so sorry...whatever took so long?" she asked in her soothingly calm voice. I looked to Baron, as I didnt want to talk, and I wished he would tell them, to this he nodded in agreement. Baron started speaking of the incident "Haru encountered a defecit in stairs along the way, Im afraid she was unable to pull herself up in time to make the portal" he had an appropriate tone in his voice, and I smiled at him, my hazel eyes were still red and puffy from sobbing, he returned the smile, which caused me to blush a bit. "Who knows" I thought "maybe I belong here".
